Castlemaine Jazz Festival

The website has, at last, plenty of information on the bands playing and the venues. It all happens this weekend, and whether you are thinking of going for the full four days, or just dipping in to see the highlights, including Nubya Garcia, who has already sold out her MIJF dates (the Age, Tuesday 5th June), it is about time to saddle up the nag and head North.

Indonesian band Astrid Sulaiman & Yuri Mahatma Jazz Quartet will be playing, and should be right in the groove for typical Castlemaine Jazz Festival goers, with a range of jazz standards and originals. They played up a storm at the Junktion on Wednesday.

Castlemaine is in its fifth year, and as always features a wide cross section of musical genres and abilities, united by a sense of fun, playing in venues that range from wacky to tacky to rather good. My personal favourite amongst the venues that have stayed the course is probably the Governor’s Mess Hall at Old Castlemaine Gaol, the Cell Block has its devotees, and Maurocco Bar is surprisingly good (and comfortable).

Check the website for session times and bands.
